KingDoom Come

from US$12.00

The fable talks about a time when the birds gathered to select their king, and they decided the bird who could fly the highest would be crowned as such. The eagle, of course, beat them all, but at the last minute, the tiny wren, hidden in the eagle’s plumage took off, rested and fresh, and won the competition.

There are a lot of ways to interpret that fable, but to me, it’s a story of guile and courage, and (un)deserved victories. There’s also the question of what the fuck did the Wren do once the crown was theirs? I mean, it’s one thing to win something, and another one entirely to keep it, or to make it justice. Was the Wren a good Bird Monarch? Was the entire Bird Kingdom thrown in disarray and chaos afterwards, or did it flourish?

I don’t know that I have answers to any of those questions, or even if they’re worth asking, but I’d like to think there was a moment in time, probably in the midst of it all, when the wren was totally free of the shackles and the preconceptions that made theirs a “wren life”, and proudly yelled to the sky “Here’s your king!”. And that’s a time worth remembering. This is my take on that moment.

This print is an open edition in three sizes, printed on beautiful, museum-quality, acid-free, 300gsm paper, using archival inks. It’s a nice giclée that will live on your wall for years and years. Probably longer than the actual wren reigned.

The 5x7 and 8x10 inches prints ship flat and the 11x14 ships rolled in a sturdy cardboard tube. There are untracked (free) and tracked shipping options, and each one is sent under the vigilant eye of an imaginary wren to make sure they arrive home intact.
